More about Emily
I’m from Mississippi (if you’ve met me in person you’ve probably heard that in the first 5 minutes)—my childhood was spent in rural Mississippi and I attended Mississippi State, our land-grant institution. While I was at MSU, I got a Bachelors in English and a Masters in Sociology.
I am a union member (loved my time in SEIU as an adjunct sociology professor at SLU, now with UAW with the SLU graduate workers)
My grandpa was a school board member in rural Georgia; my great-grandpa (not his dad) was a school superintendent in Pontiac, Michigan.
I hope to accomplish a lot of things, both as a board member and professionally through my PhD, but my children will always be my greatest and most satisfying contribution to the world.
I have (finally medicated) ADHD, among other things, so my advocacy on the board for families who don’t have things together for whatever reason is based on the real life experience of overwhelm I’ve had—especially with four kids!
My husband is from New Orleans.
At this time I have more pictures of plants and flowers on my camera roll than pictures of my children.
Sometimes I cry thinking about the power even just one school staff member has to change a child’s life, and then that child as an adult, to change more lives.
In summer and fall of 2024, I developed chronic hives (thankfully now controlled via meds) and discovered I have celiac disease. Excited to see what happens if I am elected to a second term.
